Karaoke at Do Re Mi

Today, Andree and I babysat her sister's kids. We played baseball, and I played Guitar Hero with Christopher. Tonight, I hung out with beetiger and projectmothra and lediva at Do Re Mi on Cambridge St, Allston MA for karaoke. Andree came to visit me after the babysitting was done with. We had lots of fun. Rhys is such a cute little guy, he reads and sings very well for a three year old. Vicki got the giggles with Rhys and I sang "Teddy Bear" by Elvis Presley, and they both enjoyed "Mama Look, a Boo Boo" by Harry Bellafonte. I look forward to trying again some time, and seeing them for more fun and games. Maybe Guitar Hero? .

So what's been going on lately?

Over the season of Lent, I had been posting Scriptural and Patristic quotes from the Liturgy of the Hours, but I somehow misplaced my prayer book and haven't found it yet. I'm hoping I can find Volume Two and resume sharing some tidbits for Ordinary Time, which begins the day after Pentecost, which this year coincides with the Memorial Day weekend.

Back in high school and college, I had studied Judo and Karate, attaining a brown belt in Judo and a blue belt in Fred Villari's Karate school. After a long hiatus, I have started taking Karate again, starting over fresh with American Kenpo Karate. Hopefully I'll be testing for yellow belt next Wednesday.

While I was working out with a buddy, I broke a blood vessel in my leg and had a nasty looking hematoma, about the size of half a baseball. It's slowly shrinking and most of the bruise color had gone away. It doesn't hurt anymore. I took some time off karate, but I just started up again and I feel good about it.

I also had a 3 cm growth taken out of my left cheek and lower gum. It was a benign lipoma, but I'm glad to be rid of it.

I can't talk a lot about work and financial stuff, but after 13 months of things not going well, I'm feeling hopeful again, finally on a path to a better future. Thanks to all of you for your prayers and support.

I look forward to posting some more soon, with an attitude of gratitude.

First Sunday of Lent

II Corinthians 6:1-4a

We beg you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says, "In an acceptable time I have heard you, on a day of salvation I have helped you." Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation! We avoid giving anyone offense, so that our ministry may not be blamed. On the contrary, in all that we do we strive to present ourselves as ministers of God.

From a commentary on the psalms by Saint Augustine, bishop:

Our pilgrimage on earth cannot be exempt from trial. We progress by means of trial. No one knows himself except through trial, or receives a crown except after victory, or strives except against an enemy or temptations....

If in Christ we have been tempted, in Him we overcome the devil. Do you think only of Christ's temptations and fail to think of His victory? See yourself as tempted in Him, and see yourself as victorious in Him. He could have kept the devil from Himself; but if He were not tempted He could not teach you how to triumph over temptation.

I Corinthians 9:24-25

While all the runners in the stadium take paert in the race, the award goes to one man. In that case, run so as to win! Athletes deny themselves all sorts of things. They do this to win a crown of leaves that withers, but we a crown that is imperishable.

Saturday lessons

From the treatise Against Heresies by Saint Irenaeus, bishop:

In the beginning God created Adam, not because He needed man, but because He wanted to have someone on whom to bestow His blessings. Not only before Adam but also before all creatino, the Word was glorifying the Father in whom He dwelt, and was himself being glorified by the Father. The Word Himself said: "Father, glorify Me with that glory that I had with You before the world was."

Nor did the Lord need our service.... Those ... in the light do not illuminate the light....

The same is true of service to God: it adds nothing to God.... Rather, He gives life and immortality and eternal glory to those who follow and serve Him.... He is rich, perfect and in need of nothing.

The reason why god requires service from man is this: because He is good and merciful He desires to confer benefits on those who persevere in His service. In proportion to God's need of nothing is man's need for communion with God.

This is the glory of man: to persevere and remain in the service of God.... As He said: "I wish that where I am they also may be, that they may see My glory."

Isaiah 1:16-18

Wash yourselves clean!
Put away your misdeeds from before My eyes; cease doing evil; learn to do good.
Make justice your aim; redress the wronged,
hear the orphan's plea, defend the widow.
Come now, let us set things right, says the Lord:
Though your sins be like scarlet, they may become white as snow;
Though they be crimson red, they may become white as wool.

Revelation 3:19-20

Whoever is dear to Me I reprove and chastise. Be earnest about it, therefore. Repent! Here I stand, knocking at the door. If anyone hears Me calling and opens the door, I will enter his house and have supper with him, and he with Me.

Galations 6:7b-8

No one makes a fool of God! A man will reap only what he sows. If he sows in the field of the flesh, he will reap a harvest of corruption; but if his seed-ground is the spirit, he will reap everlasting life.

Homily by Saint John Chrysostom, bishop

Practice prayer from the beginning. Paint your house with the colors of modesty and humility. Make it radiant with the light of justice. Decorate it with the finest gold leaf of good deeds. Adorn it with the walls and stones of faith and generosity. Crown it with the pinnacle of prayer. In this way you will make it a perfect dwelling place for the Lord. You will be able to receive Him as in a splendid palace, and through his grace you will already possess Him, His image enthroned in the temple of your spirit.

Sermon by St. Leo the Great, Pope.

Dear friends, at every moment "the earth is full of the mercy of God," and nature itself is a lesson for all the faithful in the worship of God....

The works of mercy are innumerable. Their very variety brings this advantage to those who are true Christians, that in the matter of almsgiving not only the rich and affluent but also those of average means and the poor are able to play their part. Those who are unequal in their capacity to give can be equal in the love within their hearts.

Ash Wednesday: Isaiah 58

This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke;
Setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke;
Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless;
Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own....

If you remove from your midst opression, false accusation and malicious speech;
If you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted;
Then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday....

Who wants to do karaoke outside, play games inside, or just hang out? Perhaps we can dance!

It's Friday 18 January through Monday 21 inclusive. An extra day! I think it's MLK holiday. I'll be married by then and probably living in Woburn MA.

Well, it fits the bill.

But there's one thing that makes autumn sweet for me,
And makes every Sunday a treat for me!

All the world seems in tune on a fall afternoon,
As we're swallowing pigeons in the park!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/6083468.stm

Maybe we need to re-think the pelican as a Christ symbol.

*sigh*

Repentence and apologies

I like to think that a big part of my values system is being pro-life, pro-child, pro-family, and pro-woman. This is why I have been repeatedly saddened by seeing and hearing of or reading of (what seemed to me at the time to be) the maltreatment of those (mostly female) persons whom I hold dear, by those responsible for raising and caring for them, and teaching them how to be good parents, teachers, and leaders themselves: parents, godparents, etc, especially mothers and aunts.

Unfortunately, in my zeal for a nebulous concept of idealized family life (which I concede is probably different from our Creator's ideal, what's actually most 'natural,' or what's actually practical for the persons involved) I have violated such basic precepts as "Honor your father and mother," (to say nothing of other elders and persons in authority) "Do not bear false witness," (not only by calumny but by detraction, when a fault might be real but not someone else's business, and by gossip when the truth is unknown) "Do not covet," (being envious or jealous of those whose rights or powers of decision making I attempted to usurp,) and most basically, "Love your neighbor as yourself."

That said, to anyone whom I have disrespected, either directly or through friends or family, especially by suggesting prosecution, persecution, litigation, disowning, excommunication, disfellowshipping, shunning, or violence, I would like to apologize to you all and ask for your forgiveness and prayers.

Cleaning!

I cleared two baskets of trash out of my room tonight, in time for trash pickup tomorrow, and also filled a bag of paper to recycle and got rid of some plastic fast food drink cups to recycle.

I vacuumed the floor between my desk and my bed, and all the way to the doorway. I even put stuff in the filing cabinet that I've been using as a nightstand for months and months.

If only I could find the clamp for my desk lamp....
